Penampang cops nab 16 people at night spots

KOTA KINABALU: Police arrested 16 people for various offences after raiding two night spots in Penampang near here early Sunday (Dec 31).

Among them were the managers of the respective outlets and a deejay for running the entertainment centres without valid licences.

The music equipment from both premises were also seized in the joint operation by personnel from state and district.

Penampang OCPD Supt Sammy Newton said they also tested 81 workers and customers and found two men positive for methamphetamine.

He said six foreign women were also among those picked up for abusing their passports to work in the night spots.

“Four foreign men were detained as well after they failed to produce any valid identification document,” he said, in a statement on Sunday.

“All the detainees and seized items were brought to the Penampang police station for further action under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, state Public Entertainment Ordinance 1958 and the Immigration Act 1963, among others,” he added.

Supt Sammy said they had also earlier raided another illegal night club in Penampang the previous day and arrested its caretaker as well as music equipment.

“We will continue to monitor the night spots in the district and we advise all operators to follow the rules,” he said.
