Local news was integrated into the early programming of WJAR.
However, it wasn’t easy at first.
The original newscasts were delivered by a Western Union Boy and a sealed envelope around 10:00 p.m.

Then came the news reels.
It was soon decided that local announcers should announce local newscasts.
They were often sponsored by oil companies.
Russ Van Arsdale reminisced about the early days with NBC 10 in the 80s.

"During the early years, our newscast was short, and consisted mostly of slides, still photos, and film,” said Van Arsdale.
Early newscasters weren’t so much journalists as they were announcers.

Art Lake delivered the weekend news report and later became a popular weather forecaster.
Thanks for turning to 10.
