Man killed in Kluang shophouse fire

KLUANG: A 27-year-old man was found dead near a fire that broke out at a Kampung Paya shophouse here.

Kluang deputy OCPD Deputy Supt Nik Mohd Azmi Husin said police received a distress call after the fire broke out at 12.16pm on Sunday (April 21).

“When our personnel arrived at the scene, we found that the second floor of the shophouse was on fire, and the man was lying on the sidewalk,” he said.

DSP Nik Mohd Azmi said that Kluang Hospital personnel declared the man dead at the scene, adding that firemen were able to put out the blaze.

He then said that the initial investigation found that the body of the man was brought down by his family after they found him motionless on the floor of the shophouse’s second storey.

“Only the deceased was on the top floor of the shophouse, while his other family members were downstairs helping their parents. The deceased was unemployed and sometimes goes down to help at the shop when told off by his parents,” he added.

DSP Nik Mohd Azmi said police did not find any signs of a struggle on the man’s body, also saying that no signs of a break-in were found.

He added that police have classified the case as a sudden death pending reports from the Fire and Rescue Department as well as an autopsy report.
